Periodontal bacteria and Premature labor - Results from a new study

The recent study from University of Chile found P.gingivalis in the amniotic fluid (Study Abstract*) of pregnant women with a diagnosis of threatened pre-term labor. The study subjects included 8 subjects with gingivitis, 12 with chronic periodontitis and 6 without periodontal disease (total 26 subjects). Previous studies have found antibodies for oral pathogens in the amniotic fluid and with the findings from this current study makes this relationship much stronger.
It would certainly be interesting to explore and to know about the type of host reactions occurring to this type of infection in the amniotic cavity. Its know that during the pre-term labor the infections are known to up-regulate the host derived enzymes and pro-inflammatory markers. Some of these enzymes (esp matrix metalloproteinases) which are normally secreted during normal delivery process are secreted in excess because of the infections leading to adverse pregnancy outcomes. So how (and if at all it dose?) these P.gingivalis found in the amniotic cavity participate in this process of adverse pregnancy outcome.
The presence of the this bacterial dose not prove the causal relationship between periodontitis and pre-term labor but gives the expecting moms more reasons to take care of their gums and visit their dentists.
